Safe driving tip for the day. At 50 mph, it takes about 400 feet to react to something and come to a stop. At 30 mph, it can take about 200 feet to react and stop. When driving in heavy rain or snow, it often is tough to see 400 feet. Frequently visibility can drop to 200 feet. Slow down and drive safely. If you are not sure about the distance, use the 4 second rule. Find an object at the edge of your vision (object needs to be stationary, like an exit sign or billboard). Count to four slowly (one-one-million, two-one million, etc). If you pass the object before you complete your 4 count, you may be driving to fast for the conditions. This rule is also good for assessing your night driving. Don’t drive faster than your headlights safely allow.
