As many Arkansas residents join people nationwide who hit the roads for the holidays, car, truck and motorcycle drivers should be especially aware of the increased accident risk that goes hand-in-hand with the annual Thanksgiving-to-New Year travel uptick.
The winter holidays mark the busiest travel season of the year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. This week alone, the number of people taking trips of 50 miles or more goes up by more than 50 percent.
Here are three other indictors of just how busy the roads get during the holiday season:
Holiday Travel Stat No. 1: More than 90 percent of long-distance holiday travel happens in a personal motor vehicle such as a car or truck.
Holiday Travel Stat No. 2: Despite the annual media blitz on holiday air travelers, the Department of Transportation reports that less than 10 percent of holiday travel happens by air, bus, train, ship or other mode of commercial transportation.
Holiday Travel Stat No. 3: The average Thanksgiving road trip is about 200 miles, as opposed to the average Christmas road trip, which is just under 300 miles.
