While drivers around Little Rock, Arkansas and nationwide enjoy lower gas prices, our attorneys have learned of one surprising result: The potential for more car accidents and crash fatalities.
Since cheaper gas tends to encourage people to drive more, that financial phenomenon sparks a spike in local car accident fatalities, according to research being conducted at South Dakota State University.
One study in the project looked specifically at gas prices in Minnesota. When that state experienced a 20-cent fall in gas prices, researchers learned that at the same time, an additional 15 car accident fatalities were recorded in Minnesota.
“A $2 drop in gasoline price can translate into about 9,000 road fatalities per year in the U.S.,” South Dakota State University sociologist Guangqing Chi said in an interview with National Public Radio.
According to CNN, U.S. gas prices are now at a six-year low. Around Little Rock, some communities have seen gas prices fall as much as 50 cents or more compared to a year ago at this time.
If social scientists are correct, that means our Little Rock-area car accident attorneys should be, and are, prepared to litigate even more auto accident cases.
If you’re unsure about what to do after a car accident, we can help with that, too.
