The Arkansas state prison inmate-electrician who died earlier this month was involved in what is one of the four most common types of dangerous construction site accidents.
In fact, electrocutions are included in the list of what the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration refer to as “Construction’s Fatal Four.”
That government agency determined that the “Fatal Four” were responsible for nearly 60 percent of the fatal construction site accidents in 2014.

- Electrocutions
- Struck by an Object
- Caught in/between something
Failing to properly manage hazardous power sources also makes the list of OSHA’s ten most common construction site violations. Faulty electrical system design is makes that dubious list, too.
Four other common construction site violations, according to OSHA, are:
- Fall protection
- Proper hazard communications
- Shoddy scaffolding, and
- Proper respiratory construction
That last issue is especially worrying because separate research has determined that construction companies who cut corners when it comes to general safety guidelines also commonly tend to botch the removal and disposal of toxic asbestos.
